If you want to visit Budapest and you are a booklover then it’s really hard to get some good adresses and it’s difficult to discover nice libaries and bookstores, too. We travelled to Budapest a while ago and we are proud to present you a nice, tiny travel guide what you can do in Budapest if you are bibliophile:

Plätze zur Inspiration // places for inspiration

Our first stop was probably also the most magnificent bookstore: Atlantisz Könyvkiadó (Anker köz 1-3, 1061 Budapest, opening hours: 10:00 to 18:00). It was a really well sorted bookstore with lots of literature for university students. There are a lot of books in different languages, most of them are in German and English (and of course Hungarian). We fell in love with this wonderful place because the appearance of this bookstore is just so awesome.

A little bit later we found a nice second-hand bookshop Könvyek Könvytárak Vétele (along the road Üllői út) which was full of german books, it was stunning. It’s a pity that we didn’t find anything that was for us. But there is one thing we want to show you: Every wall of the second-hand bookshop was filled with books up to the ceiling:

In particular it was a really nice experience to get to know an outside market in Budapest. At the well known Vörösmarty tér – square there is the famous paprika market (open from 10.00 am to 10.00 pm). Besides the great food and beverages there is also a market stall by Bomo Art Budapest, where you can get some really great stuff for authors.

Another tip (especially for music lovers) is Rózsavölgyi és Társa in der  Szervita tér 5, 1052 Budapest (open from 10.00 am to 10.00 pm). I don’t know any store in Austria that have so many scores for different instruments available. Additionally, they have thousands and thousands of books for bibliophile friends – and: you also can get beautiful postcards.

You can’t imagine the Odyssey we had to go through to get to the library (open from 9.00 to 20.00) at Castle- Quarter. There were a lot of construction sites that made it difficult to get into the library. If you are interested in architecture of the 1980ties and you like communistic functional buildings you are right here – for sure. It’s really funny that the library preserved all of their card indexes. But: Here are 7 million books and a little museum about the history of this library. The adress: Országos Széchényi Könyvtár, Budavári Palota „F“ épület.

Our last stop was a lucky strike: In the vicinity of the famous Astoria hotel, we discovered the bookstore Líra Könyvesbolt (Múzeum krt. 17, 1053 Budapest, opening hours: 10:00 – 18:00). If you are interested in english-written young adult novels or fantasy, you are going to find something here. There are only a few German books, also this bookshop belongs to a bookshop chain.

Nette Plätze zum Schreiben // Nice places for writing

If you are looking for a nice café where you can write, you are going to find a lot in Budapest. There are so many nice little coffeeshops with really likeable staff and creative food that you want to stay there forever. I want to recommend two of them:

If you are in Budapest, you have to visit Café Spinoza (Dob u. 15, 1074 Budapest, from 8:00 till 23:00). It is really comforting and warming and you suddendly feel cheered up by the athmosphere. The food tastes fantastic and it’s fresh. But we don’t want to forget the most important point: You can work there undisturbed and have a cozy look out of the windows.

Unser all time favourite wird das internationale Café samt Buchhandlung Massolit sein (Nagy Diófa u. 30, 1072 Budapest, Öffnungszeiten: 8:30 bis 19.30). Warum?

Our all time favourite is going to be the international café and bookstore Massolit (Nagy Diófa u. 30, 1072 Budapest, Öffnungszeiten: 8:30 bis 19.30). Why? Because they have so many books that you can dream at night about them. All books are in English. It’s possible to rent a workspace and work and write together. Not to forget: There are homemade pies, cakes and cookies. The staff speaks most perfect English, I’m sure you won’t forget. The music there is to die for. Yep. It’s love at the first sight.
